Peak Q1 2023

February Peak Subscription Box

To kick off our first peak sub of the year, we have a coffee from the annual Pride of Gesha auction and a natural laurina from Cafe Granja La Esperanza (CGLE).

Gesha Village: Gesha GVA 11 Oma 31 Natural

Origin: Oma block, Gesha Village, Ethiopia

Roast Profile: Light

We were fortunate enough to secure this lot from the annual Pride of Gesha auction with a winning bid of $56.75 USD/lb. This coffee is from the Oma block and is of the gesha 1931 variety, so named from the year it was documented by researchers. It is considered to be the variety of which panama geisha comes from. This coffee was naturally processed on raised African beds drying in full sun for 21-40 days and had a cup score of 89.25.

Tasting Notes: Tea Rose, Cantaloupe, Nectarine, Oolong

Cafe Granja La Esperanza: Natural Laurina

Origin: Trujillo, Valle del Cauca, Colombia

Roast Profile: Light

Cafe Granja La Esperanza continues to be one of our favourite producers with incredible quality and innovative lots. In the past we found Laurina to be an interesting variety with a uniquely delicate and clean flavour profile paired with soft acidity and low bitterness. This is a variety which seems to do well with more involved processing allowing fermentation to tease out more sweetness and intensity. With a relatively short and controlled fermentation of 36 hours before drying, this Laurina from CGLE showcases how fermentation can build on the strengths of this variety.

Tasting Notes: Strawberry, Kyoho Grape, Kombucha, Vanilla
